British men second biggest ‘couch potatoes’

British men spend almost half their free time glued to the television, second to only Hungarian men, a European survey shows. The average British male spends 49% of their leisure time in front of the TV, the average Hungarian male – 51%. Those who watched TV least were the Germans at 34% and Norwegians, 35%.

By comparison, British women spend 44% of their spare time watching television and videos, ranking fifth in the table. The Hungarians again top the league of TV watchers at 56%, the lowest being Norway at 29%.

Glaring difference’

The survey also found British men spend an average of only 3% of their spare time helping others – compared with 5% for women. The survey of ten countries – Belgium, Germany, Estonia, France, Hungary, Slovenia, Finland, Sweden, the UK and Norway – reveals the average breakdown of the 24-hour day.

In Britain’s case, men sleep on average 8hrs 11mins a night, women for 8hrs 25mins a night. They spend just over 90mins a day travelling and use up more than two hours a day on meals and "personal care". The glaring difference between the British sexes is over the time spent doing domestic work – 3hrs 28mins a day on average for women and 1hr 54mins for men. Men spend nearly 5hrs 45mins a day on "gainful work or study", compared with just over 4hrs for women.

The figures come from Eurostat, the EU’s Luxembourg-based statistical office, which investigated the way time is used by Europeans aged between 20 and 74. The times are averaged across the whole year, including holidays and weekends. On that basis, women spend far more time on domestic work than men – ranging from 50% more in Sweden to 90% more in France.

In nearly all countries, women do more food preparation, dish washing, cleaning, laundry and childcare, while men do more gardening, construction and repairs. But among the predictable figures are some surprises – in Britain, women spend 15% of their domestic time on shopping, compared with 17% for men. But overall men are deemed to have more free time then women – 4hrs 41mins per 24-hour day for men compared with 4hrs 21mins for women. For the purposes of the survey, free time includes watching television, resting, volunteer work and meetings, sorts and outdoor activities, hobbies and games and "doing nothing".
