a (had) better + (not) do szerkezet használatáról

I better not do something – ez a tagadó kifejezés azt jelenti, hogy ‘jobban tenném, ha nem …’, ‘inkább nem …’. Ha nem az én az alany, akkor javaslatokra vagy figyelmeztetésre használjuk. Fontos, hogy a not elé semmilyen segédige nem szükséges! Ha állítunk vele, akkor egyszerűen had better + do szerkezetet használunk, így azt jelenti, hogy ‘jobb lenne csinálni valamit’.

A teljes szerkezet így hangzik: I had better not do something vagy I’d better not do something, de a beszélt nyelvben sokszor kiesik a had.

Példák állításra:

I (had) better go home now. – Most már jobb lenne hazamennem.

We (had) better use the elevator. – Jobban tennénk, ha lifttel mennénk.

Példák tagadásra:

I (had) better not eat this. – Jobban tenném, ha ezt nem enném meg.

You (had) better not come home late. – Jobban tennéd, ha nem későn jönnél haza.
