RICH AND THICK HOT CHOCOLATE
Hot chocolate(also called hot cocoa, drinking chocolate or just cocoa) is a hot drink. It is usually made by mixing chocolate or cocoa powder and sugar with warm milk or water. Drinking a nice cup of hot chocolate makes everybody fell happier and warmer. Some studies have also shown that hot chocolate may even be healthy because of the antioxidants that are in cocoa. Until the 1800s, hot chocolate was also used by doctors as a medicine against some diseases.
It is believed that the hot chocolate drink was first made by the Mayan people about 2,000 years ago. Another cocoa drink was made by the Aztecs by 1400 AD/CE. The drink became popular in Europe after being brought from Mexico into the new World, and has changed a lot since then. Today, hot chocolate is used around the world. It comes in many different types such as the very thick cioccolata densa in Italy, and the thinner hot cocoa that is usually drunk in the United States.
Ingredients (for 2 persons):
– 1 cup whole milk
– 1 cup heavy cream
– 1/4 cup (superfine or caster) granulated sugar
– 1 100-gm bar dark bittersweet chocolate, finely sliced or given a couple of whirls in the food processor
– 1/4 cup good quality cocoa powder
Preparation:
In a medium saucepan, stir together the milk, cream, and sugar – bring to a boil over medium heat. Add the chopped chocolate and cocoa powder, and bring to a boil again, all the time whisking with a good whisk. You want the chocolate and cocoa to dissolve, and the mixture to thicken. Serve immediately, and optionally with a side of whipped cream.

Americans use the terms "hot chocolate" and "hot cocoa" interchangeably. In other places, a distinction is made between "hot cocoa", made from powder made by removing most of the rich cocoa butter from the ground cacao beans, and "hot chocolate", made directly from bar chocolate, which already contains cocoa, sugar and cocoa butter.
