Fear is a natural part of life. Everyone has something they fear. For instance, some people are afraid of heights, water or spiders and many people are afraid of death. However, some people suffer from an extreme, irrational fear, known as a phobia. Let’s take a look at 10 unusual phobias.
Ablutophobia
Ablutophobia is an irrational fear of bathing. The exact cause is not understood. However, it may be caused by genetics or brain chemistry. The phobia may also be the result of a negative experience connected to bathing or washing.
Plutophobia
Plutophobia is the fear of wealth. People with this phobia fear wealthy and powerful people. Although many people aspire to be rich, people with plutophobia may fear becoming wealthy. They may actually sabotage their own opportunities for success due to their irrational fear. As is the case with most phobias, the exact cause is unknown.
Pogonophobia
Pogonophobia is an intense fear of beards or any type of facial hair. People with this phobia may experience panic when they are around people with beards. Some people who suffer from pogonophobia may also fear growing their own facial hair. Although the exact cause is unknown, those who suffer from this phobia may associate facial hair with uncleanliness or having something to hide.
Spectrophobia
Spectrophobia is the fear of mirrors or one’s own reflection. Spectrophobia can be a difficult phobia to live with for people who fear reflections. Although it is possible to hide or remove mirrors, it is quite difficult to avoid reflective surfaces altogether. Some mental health professionals believe this phobia may stem from a fear of ghosts or the fear of bad luck associated with breaking a mirror.
Allodoxaphobia
Allodoxaphobia is an irrational fear of opinions. Depending upon the individual, the phobia may be specific in regards to the person or about opinions in general. A person who suffers from allodoxaphobia may have an intense fear of the opinions others have about them and they may also refrain from having their own opinions. Allodoxaphobia may stem from a person’s own insecurities and low self-esteem.
