Here is the route for the 2021 Tour de Hongrie!
Five days, 794 km
The 2021 Tour de Hongrie has been revealed with confirmation of its details of the 42nd edition. Hungary’s Tour will begin in Siófok on 12 May and after five days and 794 km the race will conclude in the Hungarian capital, Budapest.
“Cycling fans know very well, that each year we try to include new routes into the program. Last year, due to the planned Giro d’Italia start in Hungary, most of the stages were held in the Northern part of the country. However, we promised that in 2021 the Western part of Hungary would be in focus” – said Karoly Eisenkrammer, Main Organizer of the race.
The “Capital of Summer”, Siófok will host Stage 1 of the 42nd edition of Tour de Hongrie, on 12 May. The etape ends in the hilly Kaposvár. Peloton stays two days nearby the famous and popular “Hungarian Sea”, Lake Balaton, as on 13 May riders will travel from Balatonfüred to Nagykanizsa as Stage 2.
The race is turning to North then, when Stage 3 is taking place between Veszprém and Tata. On Stage 4 we will be able to say, it’s the big one, when peloton will reach Hungary’s highest point in Gyöngyös-Kékestető, after a start in Balassagyarmat, City of the Bravest.
Hungary’s capital city, Budapest has the honour of hosting the race’s final stage. Riders will compete around one of the most beautiful and unique parts of the city. Stage 5 includes 12 laps before the finish in Budapest, at Heroes Square.
“Our main priority was to organize a safe race. The health of the riders, organizers and citizens is in our focus. Organizers will follow their own and the UCI’s COVID-regulations, Tour de Hongrie is going to be held in accordance with the rules. We really looking forward to this event” – said Tünde Szabó Dr., Secretary of State for Sports.
“With Tour de Hongrie, we have reached the world-stage of sport, this competition looks like the same as any French, Italian or Belgian races on international TV channels. We have received very positive feedbacks from the teams, riders last year. Tour de Hongrie is the jewel in the crown of Hungarian cycling, the most spectacular and most famous one over the world” – said Peter Princzinger Dr., President of the Hungarian Cycling Federation.
“Last year lots of races were cancelled and we found ourselves in a premium position as we were able to organize our competition. Then, those teams who attended our event got different opinion about the race and everything around it” – added Laszlo Szilasi, Race Director, who also mentioned, in 2021 peloton is going to be even stronger.
Six World Tour Teams (TREK-Segafredo, Team BikeExchange, Jumbo-Visma, Israel Start-Up Nation, Astana-Premier Tech and Bahrain-Victorious), ten Pro Teams, five Continental squads and the National Team of Hungary, so 132 riders of 22 teams will attend Hungary’s biggest cycling race.
According to the plans, defending champion Attila Valter will compete in the Giro d’Italia in May, however, several great Hungarian riders will be at the start of Tour de Hongrie, we expect fifteen Hungarians to compete.
“Cycling is getting more and more popular in Hungary, I really hope that our clubs can keep the pace, in order to provide appropriate place for kids. Now more and more children try cycling” – said Mariusz Revesz, Government Commissioner for the Active Hungary.
David Szekely, Director of Hungary’s national sport channel, M4 Sport, said that Tour de Hongrie is one of the greatest challenges to broadcast on TV. “It requires motors, helicopter, plane, special devices to show the race and the beautiful landscapes. To cover a cycling race is more difficult than broadcasting a football Champions League match” – he added.
The race can be watched and followed live on M4 Sport this year as well, then Eurosport is going to stream 45-min highlights after the first four stages, final etape in Budapest will be broadcasted live on Eurosport 2. Fans will be able to follow Tour de Hongrie all around the world, in more than 150 countries in 2021.
