The Bear Farm in Veresegyháza

There is a small town near Budapest, called Veresegyháza. Here, you can find a unique kind of zoo, the Bear Farm.

The Bear Farm became famous very quickly, and today, it is the fifth most visited zoo in Hungary. The aim of the founders was to guarantee a safe environment, where visitors can admire the animals without disturbing them. The park got its ‘zoo qualification’ in 2009 and admits 200 thousand visitors a year.

The facility is five and a half acres big and is the only place of its kind in Europe that is supported by the local government and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). The farm opened in 1998 and its mission is to save bears living in bad conditions.

There are bears from zoos, private owners, and also from abroad, this is why the population is constantly growing. They live in a separate area with two lakes and twelve caves. Additionally, there is also a forest, where they can climb on the trees or hide in the shadows from the heat. They have plenty of water and big space for playing. The workers keep these bears as free as it is possible in a natural environment.

In 2000, wolves arrived at the park and today, 19 of them live here. There is a big lake, and 1,5 acres are available for these animals. The three packs live separately: the gentle ones, the calm ones who live with the bears, and the big pack in the forest. In 2010, new residents arrived; the raccoons and the South American coatis. Today, you can also meet reindeer here. Feeding times attract a lot of birds, so it is worth looking at the sky these times.

The Bear Farm is continuously getting nicer and nicer, for this reason, it can be a whole-day trip. The playground and the little engine entertain the smallest ones, what is more, there is also an adventure park.

However, the best part for all ages is that visitors can feed the bears by themselves with honey from wooden spoons. In the park’s restaurant, you can buy delicious homemade meals. The farm has different kinds of programmes, so check out their website.
