Jabba the Hush: Man who played vile Star Wars villain now working as a LIBRARIAN

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away Toby Philpott played vile Star Wars villain Jabba the Hutt. Now the movie puppeteer stops others jabbering in his latest job as a librarian. Toby, 67, climbed inside the slimy intergalactic gangster to operate his left arm, head and flicking tongue in the sci-fi classic Return of the Jedi in 1983. But 30 years after working on the third in the hit movie series, with Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill, he works in Cardiff Central Library.

Toby said:  “It feels like I almost lead a double life. The Star Wars films have a following like no other in history so I do get asked to speak at conventions. But I can go shopping and no one ever recognises me as Jabba – which is good. But people who find out love talking about it and I don’t mind.”

Toby, who runs computer courses at the library, has also worked as a street performer in Mexico and a clown in London. But his big break came as a puppeteer for Muppets creator Jim Henson. And it was while working for him that he landed the job as loathsome slug Jabba, who enslaves Princess Leia, played by Carrie Fisher, and drools over her in a very disturbing way. She eventually escapes by killing him. But Jabba slid back into the franchise in the 1999 prequel, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
