Pope Francis was born on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His birth name was Jorge Mario Bergoglio. Before becoming Pope, he was a Cardinal in Argentina. He worked very closely with people in his community and was known for his humble lifestyle.

On March 13, 2013, he was chosen as Pope and decided to take the name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, who is famous for his love of nature and the poor. Pope Francis was the first Pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to become Pope. Jesuits are a religious group known for their focus on education and missionary work. They are often involved in teaching and helping communities around the world.
