Richard Attenborough dies at 90
Actor and film director Richard Attenborough passed away yesterday, the family confirmed. Lord Attenborough enjoyed success as one of Britain’s leading actors, before becoming a successful director. Born in Cambridge in 1923, he was a leading figure of the British film business for more than 60 years as actor, Oscar-winning director and prolific movie-maker.
One of his well-known roles is that of John Hammond, the owner of Jurassic Park and founder of InGen in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster. For the historical epic, Gandhi (1982), Lord Attenborough was awarded an Oscar for best film and best director, besides Ben Kingsley receiving the Academy Award for best leading actor. Chaplin (1993), starring Robert Downey Jr. was another memorable direction by Attenborough, presenting the troubled and controversial life of the master comedian.
Older brother of naturalist Sir David Attenborough, famous for his wildlife programmes, Attenborough married actress Sheila Sim when he was 21. His son, Michael was born in 1949, followed by two daughters, Jane and Charlotte. Sadly, his elder daughter and his granddaughter were victims of the 2004 Thailand tsunami.
Attenborough was knighted for his services to the British film industry in 1976 and, in 1993, he was made a life peer as Baron Attenborough, of Richmond-upon-Thames. Although his appointment was non-political, he decided to sit on the Labour benches in the House of Lords, and was a champion of education for all, regardless of race, class or ethnicity. His film, Cry Freedom (1987) is based on real-life events involving black activist Steve Biko (Denzel Washington) and his journalist friend Donald Woods, who explored the South African apartheid system, political corruption and violence of the 1970s.
Having served as Vice President (1971-94) and later as President (2002-2014) of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), Attenborough will be sorely missed by the British film industry.
