Pant-stealing cat burglar Brigit’s New Zealand crime spree.

Be it mice or birds, people with cats are used to them returning from their forages with “gifts”.

But Brigit, from Hamilton city, New Zealand, has a different obsession.

She has an affinity for men’s underwear and socks.

Brigit, a six-year-old Tonkinese cat, prowls the streets of Hamilton, New Zealand, every night stalking the neighbourhood clotheslines, and often places her treasures on her owner Sarah Nathan’s bed in a proud display.

In the past two months, Ms Nathan has discovered 11 pairs of men’s boxers and more than 50 socks that she didn’t recognise. The cat likes to steal the socks in pairs.

The story has been social media catnip since Brigit’s owner, Sarah Nathan, posted a photo of her cat burglar’s collection in a widely shared Facebook post.

“Now it’s getting silly. Someone must be missing this stuff,” she said in a post shared more than 500 times.

Ms Nathan told the BBC that the trouble first began when she started discovering “odd pieces” of underwear among her washing.

“They didn’t belong to anyone in the house and one day Brigit walked into our lounge carrying a sock like a kitten,” she said, adding that Brigit’s unlucky victims were probably a nearby flat “full of blokes“.

The family said it had also started distributing street flyers.

“Keeping cats indoors isn’t common in New Zealand,” said Ms Nathan.

“Brigit doesn’t hunt birds or wildlife so it seems unnecessary and our neighbours have been very good natured about it.

“But we are moving to the country soon so hopefully she will run out of opportunity!”
