Words that matter

When someone experiences a significant event like the beginning or the end of life, it’s often difficult to find the right words to say. Birth and death are profound moments that deeply touch the human heart, and knowing how to respond with sensitivity and care is important.

In moments of grief, words often seem inadequate. When someone passes away, offering your condolences is a way to show support. You might say, “I’m so sorry for your loss,” or “I can’t imagine what you’re going through, but I’m here for you.”

Simple but heartfelt expressions acknowledge the pain the bereaved person is feeling. Be patient and listen if they need to talk about their loved one. Some people prefer sharing memories to keep the person’s spirit alive, while others might need time to process their emotions privately.

Respect their way of grieving and offer your support by being present and attentive. Celebrating a birth is filled with joy and excitement. Saying things like, “Congratulations on your new addition to the family!” or “Welcome to the world, little one!” can bring happiness to the new parents.

Adjusting to life with a newborn can be overwhelming, so offering help with meals or errands is a practical way to show your support. It’s important to be considerate and follow the family’s cues about visiting or offering help, as they might need rest and solitude in those first few weeks.

Whether it’s offering words of comfort in the face of death or conveying joy at a birth, your sincerity is what matters. Use this time to strengthen connections, as both events remind us of the fragility and beauty of life. It’s crucial to remember that everyone copes with these events differently, so being empathetic and flexible can guide you in providing the comfort or celebration that individuals might need during such significant times.

Moving house – Költözködés angolul https://www.5percangol.hu/kozepfok_szobeli/moving-house-koltozkodes-angolul/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=moving-house-koltozkodes-angolul Mon, 23 Jun 2025 06:32:02 +0000 https://www.5percangol.hu/?p=144346 Moving house is a big life event that most people experience at least once. Few people spend their life in the house or flat where they started their life as a child. Moving house can be both exciting and stressful. Whether you are moving to a new city, a different neighbourhood, a new country or just down the street, the process usually involves a lot of planning and hard work.

One of the first things to do when moving house is to find a new place to live. This might take time, as you need to consider many things. For example, you should think about the location, the size of the house, and how much rent or mortgage you can afford. Some people choose to live closer to their work or school, while others prefer a quieter area or somewhere near family.

költözködés

Once you’ve found a new home, the next step is packing. Many people don’t realize how many things they own until they have to pack them. It’s a good idea to start packing early and organize your belongings. You can pack room by room and label each box, so it’s easier to unpack later. You might also decide to throw away or donate things you no longer need. Moving is a great opportunity to declutter and start fresh.

Hiring a moving company can make things easier, especially if you have heavy furniture or a lot of boxes. However, it can be expensive, so some people prefer to ask friends or family for help and rent a van instead. Whichever option you choose, make sure you plan the moving day carefully. Don’t forget to inform your utility providers, your bank, and your employer about your new address.

The moving day itself can be tiring and emotional. Saying goodbye to your old home, neighbours, and familiar surroundings can be hard, especially if you’ve lived there for a long time. On the other hand, it’s also a chance to start a new chapter in your life. Many people feel excited about decorating their new place, exploring the area, and meeting new people.

After moving in, it might take a while to feel comfortable. Unpacking, organizing your new home, and getting used to a different environment can be challenging. But over time, most people settle in and begin to enjoy their new space. Moving house is a great chance for a fresh start and brings lots of joy and provides new experiences.

CRAIG DAVID: 7 DAYS

Verse 1:

On my way to see my friends
who lived a couple blocks away from me (owh)
As I walked through the subway
it must have been about quarter past three
In front of me
stood a beautiful honey with a beautiful body
She asked me for the time
I said it’d cost her name
a six digit number & a date with me tomorrow at nine.

Did she decline? No.
Didn’t she mind? I don’t think so.
Was it for real? Damn sure.
What was the deal? A pretty girl aged 24.
So was she keen? She couldn’t wait.
Cinnamon queen? Let me update.
What did she say? She said she’d love to
rendezvous.
She asked me what we were gonna do
said we’d start with a bottle of moet for two.

Chorus:

Monday
took her for a drink on Tuesday
we were making love by Wednesday
and on Thursday & Friday & Saturday we chilled on Sunday
I met this girl on Monday
took her for a drink on Tuesday
we were making love by Wednesday
and on Thursday & Friday & Saturday we chilled on Sunday

Verse 2:

Nine was the time
‘cos I’ll be getting mine
and she was looking fine
Smooth talker
she told me
She’d love to unfold me all night long
Ooh I loved the way she kicked it
from the front to back she flipped (back she flipped it, ooh the
way she
kicked it)
And I oh oh I yeah
hope that she’d care
‘cos I’m a man who’ll always be there

Ooh yeah
I’m not a man to play around baby
Ooh yeah
‘cos a one night stand isn’t really fair
From the first impression girl hmm you don’t seem to be like that
Cos there’s no need to chat for there’ll be plenty for that
From the subway to my home
endless ringing of my phone
When you feeling all alone
all you gotta do
is just call me call me

Chorus:

Monday
took her for a drink on Tuesday
we were making love by Wednesday
and on Thursday & Friday & Saturday we chilled on Sunday
I met this girl on Monday
took her for a drink on Tuesday
we were making love by Wednesday
and on Thursday & Friday & Saturday we chilled on Sunday

Bridge:

(Break it down, uh break it down)
Since I met this special lady
ooh yeah
I can’t get her of my mind
She’s one of a kind

And I ain’t about to deny it
It’s a special kinda thing
with you-oh…….

Chorus:

Monday
took her for a drink on Tuesday
we were making love by Wednesday
and on Thursday & Friday & Saturday we chilled on Sunday
I met this girl on Monday
took her for a drink on Tuesday
we were making love by Wednesday
and on Thursday & Friday & Saturday we chilled on Sunday

SZÓKINCS: Fashion and clothes https://www.5percangol.hu/szokincs_main/beszeljunk-a-divatrol-angolul-fashion-and-clothes/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beszeljunk-a-divatrol-angolul-fashion-and-clothes Tue, 19 Nov 2024 10:32:36 +0000 https://www.5percangol.hu/?p=117503 Fashion is a way of expressing our personality through the clothes we wear. Different people wear different styles and not everybody likes to follow the current fashion. Some people are old-fashioned and like to wear their good old clothes and buy new clothes only when it’s absolutely necessary. Others, especially women, like to follow the latest trends and buy more clothes than they really need. Quantity is more important for them than quality and they often buy fast fashion items. Fast fashion is inexpensive and usually low-quality clothing and footwear that is mass-produced with cheap labour and that’s why buying and wearing them raises ethical questions. Though it’s easily affordable for people, those who sew and produce them in the countries of their origin live in poverty and can hardly make ends meet even if they work very hard.

Most people cannot afford to buy designer clothes, as they are very expensive. Only the very rich have money to buy real designer items because they cost a fortune and are affordable for very few people. They are a symbol of status and wealth to show off with.

Peer pressure is another aspect of fashion trends. It starts as early as kindergarten where the kids must have the clothes their peers wear with all the trendy cartoon characters on. In the primary and secondary school age group wearing trendy clothes and accessories is important. Kids who cannot afford to buy and wear them are sometimes ostracized and made fun of.

Fashion is as diverse as people are. Even if something is trendy it’s not sure that it looks good on you. Everyone has to find their own fitting style in clothes and wear what they feel comfortable in. Some girls like to wear dresses and girly fashion and some girls wear only trousers and T-shirts. Boys sometimes wear the same clothes over and over again and don’t want to buy new ones, but there are boys also who are fashion-conscious and spend big amounts of money on clothes.

Fashion and fashion styles have changed a lot over the centuries. In the past, women wore only dresses and skirts. Over time the length of dresses and skirts became shorter and shorter and these days it’s absolutely acceptable for females to wear trousers. Though it’s not true the other way around. It’s not common for men to wear a skirt, except for the Scottish national kilt. Not only the styles of clothes have changed over the centuries but some new materials that clothes are made of were also invented along with the development of the clothes industry. Clothes were sewn entirely by hand a long time ago, while nowadays mass production is the norm. Hand-made clothes were replaced by mass-made ones and fast fashion is readily available for people.

Real, luxurious designer clothes have astronomical prices. High-fashion clothes were and are designed by big names like Coco Chanel or Giorgio Armani. Designer clothes are often displayed in fashion shows on catwalks by beautiful young models. New York City, London, Milan, and Paris – called the Big Four – are the most prominent fashion capitals of the world.

Kezdjünk is bele!

1.

Nézzük a leggyakoribb használatot, amikor a „wonder” igeként szerepel. Ebben az esetben azt jelenti, hogy „valaki szeretne tudni valamit”, „valaki valamin tűnődik, töpreng”. Lássunk egy-két példát.

I wonder who you are. –  Csak tudnám, ki vagy./Azon tűnődöm, hogy ki is vagy.
I wonder how long this lesson is.

TIPP:

A „wonder” igét legtöbbször Present Simple igeidőben használjuk (mint a fenti példákban), azonban sokszor előfordul Past Continuous-ban is, ilyenkor két jelentése is lehet:

a) ha valakitől udvariasan segítséget szeretnénk kérni:
I was wondering if I could ask you a favour. –  Azon gondolkodtam, hogy kérhetnék-e tőled egy szívességet.

b) ha valakitől udvariasan meg szeretnénk kérdezni, hogy van-e kedve valamit csinálni:
I was wondering if you’d like to come to the cinema with me. – Azon gondolkodtam, hogy lenne-e kedved eljönni velem moziba.

KIFEJEZÉSEK „WONDER” SZÓVAL

I don’t wonder (BR English) – I’m not surprised./ Nem csodálkozom.
I don’t wonder you’re tired. – Nem csodálkozom, hogy fáradt vagy.
I shouldn’t wonder (BR English) – I would not be surprised about something = Nem csodlkoznék, ha …
I shouldn’t wonder if he came back. – Nem csodálkoznék, ha visszajönne.

2.

A „wonder” szó lehet főnév is, ebben az esetben is két lehetőség van.

a) lehet megszámlálhatatlan (uncountable) főnév, ilyenkor azt jelenti, hogy „csoda, csodálat (maga az érzés)”

The sight of the Cathedral filled me with wonder. – A katedrális látványa csodálattal töltött el.

b) lehet megszámlálható (countable) főnév is, ilyenkor azt jelenti, hogy „csodát (a csodálatot kiváltó dolog)”

the Seven Wonders of the World – a világ hét csodája
technological wonders – a technika csodái

TOVÁBBI KIFEJEZÉSEK „WONDER” SZÓVAL

(it’s) no/small/little/ wonder that … –  nem csoda, hogy …
No wonder you’ve got a headache after last night’s party. – Nem csoda, hogy fáj a fejed a tegnap esti parti után.
it’s a wonder (that) … – Kész csoda, hogy …
It’s a wonder nobody got hurt in the accident. – Kész csoda, hogy senki nem sérült meg a balesetben.

UTAZÁS: Bosnia and Herzegovina: A Wondrous World of Mountains, Waterfalls and Water https://www.5percangol.hu/2023-augusztusi-szam-online-5-perc-angol-magazin/bosnia-and-herzegovina-a-wondrous-world-of-mountains-waterfalls-and-water/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bosnia-and-herzegovina-a-wondrous-world-of-mountains-waterfalls-and-water Tue, 15 Aug 2023 12:14:46 +0000 https://www.5percangol.hu/?p=96922 Bosnia and Herzegovina, often referred to as just Bosnia, is a surprisingly beautiful country in the Balkans. According to its people the triangular shape of Bosnia and Herzegovina resembles a heart. The country is often labelled as “the green heart of the Balkans”. It is characterized by rolling hills, expansive meadows, and dense forests, making it one of the greenest regions in the Balkans. The Dinaric Alps, which extend through much of Bosnia and Herzegovina, are covered with lush vegetation, offering a striking contrast to the rugged mountains. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country that captivates and inspires. Its rich history, diverse cultural heritage, and stunning natural landscapes make it a hidden gem of South-Eastern Europe. Whether you’re exploring the narrow streets of Sarajevo, hiking through the rugged mountains, or immersing yourself in the warm hospitality of the locals, Bosnia and Herzegovina offers an unforgettable experience that will leave you yearning to return.

Location and origins

The country borders Serbia to the east, Montenegro to the southeast, and Croatia to the north and southwest. In the south it has a narrow coast on the Adriatic Sea within the Mediterranean, which is about 20 kilometres long and surrounds the town of Neum. The name of the land is believed to derive from the name of the river Bosna that courses through the Bosnian heartland. Herzegovina means “herzog’s land”, and “herzog” derives from the German word for “duke”. The country’s name comes from the two regions Bosnia and Herzegovina, which have a very vaguely defined border between them. Bosnia occupies the northern areas which are roughly four fifths of the entire country, while Herzegovina occupies the rest in the south part of the country. The capital is Sarajevo. Important regional cities include Mostar and Banja Luka.

Captivating natural beauty

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s natural landscapes are nothing short of breath-taking. The country has a largely mountainous terrain. The Dinaric Alps dominate the western border with Croatia and numerous ranges run through the country. The highest peak, reaching 2,386 metres, is Maglić, near the border with Montenegro. Elevations of more than 1,800 metres are common, and the plateaus descend abruptly toward the Adriatic Sea.  The country is blessed with picturesque rivers, and serene lakes. The principal rivers are the Sava, a tributary of the Danube, the Bosna, Vrbas, and Una, which flow north and empty into the Sava; the Drina, which flows north, forms part of the eastern boundary with Serbia and the Neretva, with its stunningly beautiful emerald green water. About two-fifths of the country is forested with pine, beech, and oak. The rich and varied wildlife includes bears, wolves, wild pigs, wildcats, chamois, otters, foxes, badgers, and falcons.

Waterfalls in Bosnia are one of the natural beauties that are truly amazing. Kravice Falls is called Bosnia’s mini Niagara Falls presenting a special vibe and offering a chance for people to swim in the water under the waterfall. Jajce waterfall is huge and emerald green and it’s quite common that a rainbow forms above the cascading water.

Sarajevo and Mostar

The capital city, Sarajevo, is called the “Jerusalem of Europe” due to its multicultural and multi-religious heritage. It is a melting pot of cultures. The city’s historic centre boasts an eclectic mix of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Yugoslav influences, with mosques, synagogues, churches, and museums standing side by side. The Sarajevo War Tunnel, a poignant reminder of the 1992-1995 Bosnian War, is a must-visit. This underground passageway, which connected the besieged city to the outside world, serves as a symbol of hope and perseverance for the people of Sarajevo.

The city of Mostar is one of Bosnia & Herzegovina’s most popular destinations. With cobblestoned streets, old stone buildings, and its beautiful bridge spanning the picturesque Neretva River, the city looks like as if it was plucked from the pages of a fairy tale. Mostar attracts thousands of visitors per year. Stari Most, the Old Bridge, is most definitely the highlight of a visit there. You can walk across it, take selfies with it, and enjoy the views of the Old Town from the bridge. If you are lucky you may even watch as divers leap from the bridge into the river.

Hospitality and culinary delights

Bosnia and Herzegovina is renowned for its warm hospitality, where guests are welcomed with love. The locals take pride in their traditions and are eager to share their customs and stories. Visitors can indulge in Bosnian cuisine, a delicious blend of Ottoman, Mediterranean, and Eastern European flavours. Cevapi small, oblong-shaped kebabs from lamb and beef served in somun (Bosnian pita bread) with raw onions-, burek – a flaky pastry with a meat, cheese, or spinach filling -, and sogan dolma – beef-stuffed onions – are just a few of the mouth-watering dishes that will delight your taste buds.

Bosnia and Csontváry Kosztka Tivadar

Csontváry Kosztka Tivadar, the famous painter very much loved and appreciated by Hungarians had a significant connection to Bosnia. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he embarked on several journeys to various places in Europe and the Middle East, seeking inspiration for his art. One of his most notable trips was his visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1903. This trip proved to be transformative for the artist and had a profound impact on his later works. During his time in Bosnia, Csontváry was captivated by the country’s landscapes, traditional architecture, and cultural diversity. The rugged mountains, lush forests, and serene lakes provided him with a wealth of natural beauty to portray in his paintings. The paintings inspired by Bosnia include Spring in Mostar, Roman Bridge in Mostar, The Electric Station of Jajce at Night, Waterfall at Jajce and Lighted Trees in Jajce.

Talking about New Year’s resolutions

A New Year’s resolution is a promise we make for the new year. Regardless of what resolution you commit to, the goal is to improve life in the coming year. Some people make a promise to change a bad habit, such as quitting smoking, others make a promise to develop a new, positive habit, such as an exercise program, or wasting less food. The most common reason for failing a New Year’s resolution is setting unrealistic goals, or not to keep track of progresses. By making your resolutions realistic, there is a greater chance that you will keep them throughout the year. So, are you ready to make some New Year’s resolutions?

What are the most common New Year’s resolutions?

exercising more

losing weight

eating more healthily

learning a new skill

quitting smoking

több edzés

fogyókúrázás

egészségesebb táplálkozás

új ismeretek megszerzése

dohányzás abbahagyása

quitting drinking:This is what many people suffering from a bad hangover say after a wild party.
getting a new job:Is also a very popular resolution, mostly if you are not happy with your current job.
getting out of debt: Paying off debts is also a very popular resolution at the end of the year.
saving money: Improving finances is a resolution that about 14% of people make every year.
getting organized: Time management and better organization is another important thing many people with to improve.
spending more time with family: Unfortunately, only a small number of people can maintain this goal.
enjoying life to the fullest: This resolution sounds very pleasant, but the failure rate is very high.
travelling more: Some of the first things we tend to think of in a new year are those exotic destinations and foreign countries we would love to see.
improving a relationship: Soon after the holidays, when the festive spirit is over, reconciling with family and friends is the last thing people care for.
learning a new language: Learning a new language is a good idea and this resolution ranks among those that quite a high percentage of people actually keep. Well … I told you!
spending less time on Facebook: Spending too much time on Facebook and other social networks is a considerable problem for surprising number of people these days.
spending less time watching TV: The only reason why people are willing to cut their TV time is because they can watch the same things online.
getting rid of old clothes: The main problem with this resolution is that some people find themselves emotionally attached to clothes.
doing something for charity: Once the holiday is over and we return to our everyday reality, unfortunately, our generosity considerably decreases.

Why to make a resolution?

Why should we make promises to ourselves? Perhaps because we know that resolutions are hard to stick to, especially when we want to give up a bad habit, like smoking, drinking, or eating too much chocolate. Another reason could be that they test our will-power. After all, going to the gym or cooking a healthy meal after a long day at work means making an extra effort. Traditionally, the beginning of a new year also brings the need for order, the need to get rid of the old stuff and magic some freshness and novelty into our boring daily lives. Selling old unwanted stuff online is definitely a modern solution to the problem and the money you get could help finance a resolution you’ve made, such as redecorating your home or renewing your hairstyle or wardrobe.

Many New Year’s resolutions focus on improving our health, fitness or finances, which often require sacrifices. Therefore, it is not difficult to see why so many of them last only for a month or so into the year. Why not pick something pleasant for the new year instead? Taking up a hobby you’ve been postponing for years might make a difference in your stressful life. The poll also shows that many people try to focus on personal relationships as well: spending more time with the kids, meeting one’s friends in person rather than online or admitting that our relationship with our spouse or partner needs some improvement can lead to a more fulfilling life.

The 13 Martyrs of Arad – Az aradi vértanúkról angolul https://www.5percangol.hu/szokincs_kozossegi_anyagok/aradi-vertanuk-angolul/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=aradi-vertanuk-angolul Thu, 06 Oct 2022 07:34:31 +0000 https://www.5percangol.hu/?p=73959 In a historic speech on March 3, 1848, shortly after news of the revolution in Paris had arrived, Lajos Kossuth demanded parliamentary government for Hungary and constitutional government for the rest of Austria. The Revolution started on March 15, 1848, and after military setbacks in the winter and a successful campaign in the spring, Kossuth declared independence on April 19, 1849. By May 1849, the Hungarians controlled all of the country except Buda, which they won after a three-week bloody siege. The hopes of ultimate success, however, were frustrated by the intervention of Russia. After all appeals to other European states failed, Kossuth abdicated on August 11, 1849, in favor of Artúr Görgey, whom he thought was the only general capable of saving the nation. On August 13, 1849, Görgey signed a surrender at Világos to the Russians, who handed the army over to the Austrians. At the insistence of the Russians, Görgey was spared. The Austrians took reprisals on other officers of the Hungarian army.

The thirteen Hungarian generals were executed by hanging at Arad on October 6, 1849, with the exception of Arisztid Dessewffy and two others, because of their friendship with the Prince of Luxembourg. Hanging was deemed a form of humiliation. On the same day, Count Lajos Batthyány (1806–1849), the first Hungarian prime minister, was executed in Pest at an Austrian military garrison. Kossuth fled to the Ottoman Empire; he maintained that Görgey alone was responsible for the failure of the rebellion, calling him “Hungary’s Judas”. Others, looking at the impossible situation Görgey was given, have been more sympathetic. They have said that, given the circumstances, he was left with no option other than surrender.

Hungarians have come to regard the thirteen rebel generals as martyrs for defending the cause of freedom and independence for their people. Not all the generals were ethnic Hungarians, but they fought for the cause of an independent and, for its age, liberal Hungary. Arad is remembered on October 6 as the place of the day of mourning for the Hungarian nation.
