Chihuahua saves mother and toddler from possible attack
A brave dog scared off an abductor about to snatch her owner’s baby – despite being just 10 inches tall.
Tiny Piccolo the Chihuahua has been hailed a hero after saving terrified mum Charlie Preston and her 18-month-old daughter Lilly in a frightening attack. Their ordeal began when a topless man opened the family’s car door and ordered a shaken Ms Preston, 25, to get out.
Plucky Piccolo, three, jumped onto toddler Lilly’s lap and barked and snarled at the assailant, who then released the Vauxhall Corsa’s door and ran off.
Ms Preston battled to stop the intruder wrestling open the car’s front door but says Piccolo made a noise “worthy of a lion” and saved the day. The full-time mum had slammed down the lock for the back door as the attacker repeatedly shouted “Get out and come with me”.
Police have launched a manhunt following the trio’s ordeal, which happened as they waited in the parked car in a quiet road in Eastleigh, Hants.
Lilly’s dad Rob Smart, 25, had gone to collect an ornamental wall hanging he had bought on eBay for their kitchen. Ms Preston, from Winchester, Hants, said: "I was terrified, I kept stammering at him to stop it and leave us alone.
"My strength was clearly no match for the man, who kept telling me to get out of the car."
She fears the man, described by police as black, muscular and aged in his late 20s, wanted to abduct her daughter or launch an attack. He suddenly appeared, opened the car door and aggressively ordered her to get out. But he finally backed off and ran away when Piccolo unleashed a noise “worthy of a lion”, she said.
She added: "Piccolo growled loudly and the man let go of the door and backed off into a run. God knows what would have happened if it wasn’t for my dog – my daughter and I could have been in real trouble. If he had got me out of the car he could have hurt or abducted my baby girl. The ordeal has really shaken me up especially because Lilly was in the car. It was not until afterwards and the shock had gone until I realised what would have happened if we had not been lucky enough to have the dog in the car. I think Piccolo could sense the fact that I was scared. He is a little hero."
Rob, a web engineer, returned to the car shortly after the incident at around 9pm on Saturday and the couple dialled 999.
He said: "I feel incredibly lucky that nothing happened to my family. I cannot articulate how awful this is – my daughter fills my world."
