Rövid összefoglaló a wimbdledoni teniszklubról és a tenisztornáról infografikával.

The oldest and perhaps the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877. The Championships last two weeks and ends with the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Singles Final, called as such based on the proper naming etiquette.

Wimbledon is as much about tradition as professional sports. It is the only Grand Slam tournament that is still played on a grass court, which was the original surface of the game when it was invented as “lawn tennis”. The 100-percent rye grass is cut to exactly 8mm. There are typically also no sponsor advertisements around the courts. There is a strict dress code for competitors. Their uniforms have to be all white or almost entirely white. This was made a rule in 1963. Andre Agassi had boycotted Wimbledon because of this dress code restriction for several years. The members of the British Royal Family are part of the Wimbledon tradition. They have attended each tournament since 1907 and the Duke and Duchess of Kent are always the ones who present the trophies to the winners.

Another famous tradition is eating strawberries and cream. This dish was invented by one of King Henry VIII’s advisors in the 1500s and it has been present at Wimbledon since the 19th century. Tennis fans consume more than 28,000 kilograms of strawberries and 7,000 liters of cream every year at the Championships.
