First SMS sent turns 20 years old

The earliest form of Social Media, text messaging or SMS is 20 years old today! It was on December 2, 1992 that Vodafone sent the very first text message. It was sent over the Vodafone GSM network in the United Kingdom on 3 December in 1992, from Neil Papworth of Sema Group (now Mavenir Systems) using a personal computer to Richard Jarvis of Vodafone using an Orbitel 901 handset. The text of the message was “Merry Christmas.”

Even though the concept started since 1980 it was not until 1993 that SMS was commercially available in Finland. Not all phones in 1993 could accommodate SMS over GSM and it was only Nokia who had handsetsthat was capable of allowing users to send SMS. Furthermore, operators were slow to implement the system. Billing was also a problem but over time these issues were solved.

The number of text messages sent during the early stages of its implementation was incredibly small. Customers in 1995 sent on average only 0.4 messages per month. In 2010, the estimated volume of text messages sent was 6.1 trillion or 192.000 SMS per second. Since 2006, SMS’s worth has been netted at more than $81 billion.
