MAI LECKE
All about money in Hungary
The Hungarian currency is called the forint (Ft or HUF). The name of the forint comes from the city of Florence where gold coins were minted from 1252, called fiorino d’oro. In Hungary, florentinus, also a gold-based currency was used from 1325. From the name florentinus originates the name of florint, the later forint.
Today there are coins of 5 Ft, 10 Ft, 20 Ft, 50 Ft, 100 Ft and 200 Ft and banknotes of 500 Ft, 1000 Ft, 2000 Ft, 5000 Ft, 10 000 Ft and 20 000 Ft in circulation.
Although the official currency is the Hungarian Forint, you can also pay in other currencies – mostly in Euro – as big hypermarkets, most hotels, petrol stations, certain restaurants and also taxi companies accept Euros.

Exchanging money
Tourists can change foreign currency either in banks, at certain travel agencies or at exchange kiosks and offices. Exchange kiosks and offices are located in main tourist areas and shopping centres. They also offer better exchange rates than banks. The buy rates are always lower than the sell rates, so people have to make sure to check the displays carefully before changing money.
ATMs
There are more than 4600 ATMs in Hungary and more than 1100 operate in Budapest. All ATM machines accept a four-digit pin code. OTP bank ATMs will accept up to an eight-digit pin code.
Credit Cards
Visa, Master Card and Maestro are widely accepted in Hungary, and can be used nearly everywhere, even is smaller villages.
Tipping
Hungary is a tip-conscious country and everybody tips waiters, hairdressers and also taxi drivers. Even petrol station attendants expect some money for pumping your car. People are expected to add a further 10%-15% to the bill.
