Counties, states, provinces, regions:
My favourite film star lives in California.

Cities, towns, villages:
We stayed in Paris for a month two years ago.

Islands:
Bali used to be popular with Australian holidaymakers.

We use ‘the’ definite article with:

Rivers:
The River Nile flows through Egypt.

Mountain ranges:
I used to ski in the Alps regularly.

Deserts:
We’re travelling across the Sahara.

Oceans, seas, canals:
We’re going to sail around the Mediterranean.
I have never visited the Panama Canal.

Groups of islands:
My friends love going to the Canary Islands.

Countries that are States, Unions, Republics, Kingdoms, Emirates:
We often stay in the United States.

Countries that end in plural:
The Netherlands; the Philippines (= the full name is The Republic of the Philippines); the Bahamas (= the full name is The Republic of the Bahamas)

We also use ‘the’ before countries that end in a plural ‘s’:

the Philippines (= the full name is The Republic of the Philippines)

the Bahamas (= the full name is The Republic of the Bahamas)

the Netherlands

We also use ‘the’ with Mountain Ranges:

the Rockies / the Rocky Mountains

the Himalayas / the Himalayan Mountains

We usually use ‘the’ before the names of buildings.

the Emperor’s Palace

the Tower of Pisa

the Louvre

the Pentagon

The Marriott / The Marriott Hotel

But in the following cases we DON’T use ‘the’:

The names of stationsMain Station, Grand Central Station 

The names of airportsGatwick Airport, Pearson Airport

The names of universities (without ‘of’): Santa Monica College, Columbia University 

We use the definite article ‘the’ with names that have the preposition ‘of’

the Island of Lesbos

the University of Toronto

the Gulf of Mexico

the Republic of Congo
