A rövid pályás gyorskorcsolya vegyes váltó (Jászapáti Petra, Kónya Zsófia,Krueger John-Henry, Liu Shaolin Sándor, Liu Shaoang) szombaton bronzérmet szerzett Pekingben, majd hétfőn a rövidpályás gyorskorcsolyázók 1000 méteres számában Liu Shaoang harmadik lett. Eredményeikhez szívből gratulálunk!

The Hungarian mixed team relay won bronze, while Petra Jászapáti advanced in the women’s 500m, and John-Henry Krueger, Shaolin Sándor Liu, and Shaoang Liu advanced in the men’s 1000m.

MIXED RELAY

In the first heat, China and Italy finished in the top two, but the South Koreans slipped out, and although they finished third, their time was not promising. In heat 2, the Netherlands and Canada finished in the top two, but the Kazakhs skated better than South Korea, so they also reached the semifinals.

The third heat started with Zsófia Kónya and Petra Jászapáti, as well as with John-Henry Krueger and Sándor Shaolin Liu. The girls were in third place, but the boys were able to bring the team up first to second place, and after a brilliant overtaking by Shaolin Sándor Liu, Hungary won the heat ahead of the Russians.

Hungary also raced in the second semifinal next to the host China, the United States, and the Russian team. This time, Shaoang Liu replaced John-Henry Krueger. From heat 1, Canada and Italy made it to the final after the Dutch slipped out and the Kazakhs fell behind.

Hungary got off to a good start, Petra Jászapáti tagged Zsófia Kónya in the first place, who dropped one place behind the Americans, but she was able to hold on to them. In the end, Shaolin Sándor Liu took back the first place and finished as a heat winner.

Later, the Russians and the United States got disqualified, so the Chinese also became finalists, which was not so good news. It was also uncertain how tired the Hungarians were, especially Zsófia Kónya. Hungary stepped on the ice in an unchanged form compared to the semifinals.

After the start, the Canadians collided with Jászapáti and swept her away, but officials called for a restart. The girls skated in fourth place. Shaoang Liu overtook the Italians, and Hungary was in third place. Zsófia Kónya came up to the second place, but then she collided with the Canadian. Hungary finished fourth, but the team was still waiting for the video review. China won ahead of Italy.

As expected, Canada got disqualified, so the HUNGARIAN MIXED RELAY TOOK THE BRONZE MEDAL!

Hungary’s Sándor Liu Shaolin claimed the title of Olympic champion in 1000-meter speed skating for three minutes, but after a video check, it was determined that he had committed two fouls and was therefore disqualified. As a result, his younger brother Liu Shaoang finished third and won a medal for Hungary, the second bronze at the Beijing Olympics.

The final had to be started twice, as the first start was aborted after a few laps due to ice chunks on the surface. And although the first start was better for the Hungarian, he couldn’t complain about the second one either, as he quickly took the lead from second place. In the final, a total of three Chinese and two Hungarians competed against each other.

After the restart, the elder Liu brother engaged in a fierce battle with China’s Ren until the final meters. The Hungarian skater fell while crossing the finish line and started to cheer. But then the video control came and the jury found that Liu had committed two fouls and disqualified him with a yellow card. For him, this was a big disappointment, but for his younger brother, it meant third place, his second third-place finish in Beijing, and the third medal of his career at the Olympics.

It is the first time in the history of the Winter Olympics since 1924 that the Hungarian delegation has won more than one medal at a single event.

Liu Shaoang is the first Hungarian athlete to win at least three medals at the Winter Olympics: Four years ago, he won a gold medal in the men’s 5000-meter relay, and few days ago a bronze medal in the 2000-meter mixed relay.

Liu Shaoang is also the first Hungarian short-track athlete to win an individual medal at an Olympics.
