Márton Fucsovics: “My Dream Is to Become a Top-10 Player One Day”

“They wanted to send me home from my first training as I was even smaller than the net,” Hungary’s No. 1 tennis player tells the Friends of Hungary Foundation in a short film. Márton Fucsovics quickly adds: “But then the trainer saw that I hit the balls quite well.” That is how the now 29-year-old professional began his tennis career, becoming one of the most successful Hungarian players in the sport. Last year was one of his most victorious years. In 2020, Marci managed to rank among the best 16 or 32 in every Grand Slam Tournament and to beat several TOP20 players. The short film about Fucsovics is part of a video series that introduces ten remarkable Hungarians who were able to also make a name for themselves abroad through talent and hard work.

Márton Fucsovics began playing tennis at the age of five in his hometown in the Eastern Hungarian town of Nyíregyháza. Soon his talent became clear to tennis experts. Already at the age of eight, he was a key player among the older, twelve-year-old players and so much so that he added more and more trophies to his collection after winning smaller tournaments in 2000.

He won his first big title at the US Open Doubles in 2009. In 2010, he won Wimbledon Singles and furthermore entered the Semi-finals of the Australian Open and US Open. With this he reached the top position of the junior world ranking list on July 5, 2010.

“When I was eighteen playing Grand Slams, success came- I won Wimbledon, that was a big push and I felt that I had chosen the right sport,”

Fucsovic admitted. And when asked about the key to his success, the athlete says:

“You really need to have healthy self-confidence and trust; without that it won’t work…  I have lost countless competitions and reached my low point very often, but the smaller and larger successes have always motivated me so that I would reach the top again.”

At the age of 15, he moved to Germany and spent almost four years at the First Line Tennis Academy. The reason was that the possibilities that were given in Germany were not available at home.

“It could be that I wouldn’t have come this far if I hadn’t gone to Germany but tried it at home. I think I built the foundation for my future there.”

The year 2018 was a breakthrough in Marci’s career as an adult. At the first Grand Slam of the year in Australia he placed among the top 16 and played against Roger Federer in the Round of 16 for the first time in his career.

Luckily, I’m good friends with Federer, he even invited me to train on his personal tennis court.”

The tennis player also talked about the time he once waited together with Federer for a match to start and Federer’s two sons came to him and asked the tennis pro: “Daddy, when will you stop playing tennis?” And Federer said to his sons: “When this guy here next to me beats me.”

Fucsovics won his first ATP-Tournament in Geneva and beat Stan Wawrinka, a multiple Grand Slam winner. In doing so he also wrote sports history as he was the first Hungarian tennis player to win an ATP-title.

Fucsovics has also been playing for the Hungarian Davis-Cup-Team.

In March 2019, he reached a career peak by being the 31st on the world ranking list. The following year was also very successful. In 2020, Marci managed to get among the best 16 or 32 in every Grand Slam Tournament and to beat several TOP20 players: Denis Shapovalov, Daniil Medvedev, and Grigor Dimitrov among others. Recently this week, he beat the Swiss Stan Wawrinka in a 5-set match which lasted four hours in the Australian Open 2021. He is now 55th on the world ranking list.

After a change of coaches in 2019, he made a bold decision: he chose two Hungarian coaches. For more than one year he has been preparing for his tournaments with Miklós Jancsó and Zoltán Nagy as well as with fitness trainer Balázs Vaskó. His successes therefore are double successes for Hungary.
