Cambridge lawn transformed into wildflower meadow
A wildflower meadow, which is the size of one and a half football pitches, has been created on one of Cambridge University’s famous lawns. The flowers were planted on the land behind King’s College in October last year, where a section of the grass has turned into a beautiful meadow after it was maintained and manicured by the college for 300 years. The grass between King’s College Chapel and the River Cam is now shining bright with red, blue, and yellow flowers. It is hoped that the project will attract a variety of new insects.
The beautiful transformation received lots of support from head gardener Steve Coghill. “We were looking at different ways of managing our lawns in ways that are better for nature, for conservation purposes, and also biodiversity.” – he said.
The college is planning to study the environmental impact of the meadow, and the plants will be harvested for hay in autumn. Most of the time students and visitors are warned to stay off Cambridge’s lawns, but paths are going to be cut through the meadow to allow people to enjoy the flowers.
Professor Geoff Moggridge was one of the people supporting the meadow’s creation. He said: “Obviously it’s going to be a developing thing, every year will be different but it’s beyond everything I had hoped for.”
