Football-related idioms

In this lesson, we are going to introduce you to some of the most common English idioms about football that can be used in conversation about any topic not just football.

Even people who do not follow football enthusiastically use these idioms in everyday speech

1. to get the ball rolling – to get something started, to begin a process – beindítani valamit

We need to have everything ready for the party by next week, so if you could please get the ball rolling by inviting everyone that would be really helpful. – Mindennel kész kell lennünk a partira a jövő hétig. Igazán segítene, ha elindítanád azzal a dolgot, hogy mindenkit meghívsz.

2. get a kick out of something – to enjoy watching or doing something –  élvezettel csinálni valamit, élvezni

If you get a kick out of horror movies then you will love the new Quentin Tarantino film. – Ha élvezed a horrorfilmeket, akkor tetszeni fog az új Quentin Tarantino film.

3. to keep one’s eye on the ball – to keep your attention focused on the matter at hand – rajta tartani a szemét valamin, nem veszíteni szem elől

If you want to be a successful businessman you need to keep your eye on the ball all the time. – Ha sikeres üzletember akarsz lenni, mindig rajta kell tartanod a szemed a dolgokon.

He took his eye off the ball. That he shouldn’t have done as the rival company snatched the deal from him. – Szem elől veszítette a dolgot, amit nem kellett volna, mert a rivális cég elhalászta előle az üzletet.

4. to watch from the sidelines – to observe a situation rather than be directly involved in – nem benne lenni valamiben, kívülről nézegetni

You have never supported me when I needed you. You just watched from the sidelines. – Sosem támogattál, amikor szükségem volt rád. Csak kívülről nézted a dolgot.

5. to move the goal posts – to  unfairly change the rules or conditions of a procedure during its course to make them harder – menet közben – többnyire hátrányosan – megváltoztatni a játékszabályokat

Jessica quit her job because her boss kept moving the goal posts about her promotion prospects. – Jessica felmondott, mert a főnöke folyton változtatgatta az előléptetése feltételeit.

6. to be on the ball – someone who is very quick to respond and is very aware of new ideas and methods – naprakész, gyors

What’s wrong with you? You used to be on the ball with your work all the time. – Mi van veled? Régebben mindig olyan naprakész voltál a munkádban.

7. a political football –  a topical issue that is the subject of continued argument or controversy – vitatott kérdés, vita tárgya, erősen foglalkoztat valakit/valamit

Retirement age is a big political football in the European Union.  – A nyugdíj korhatár az Európai Unió vitatott kérdése.

8. to kick someone around – to treat someone roughly or disrespectfully – rosszul bánik valakivel, úgy bánik vele, mint egy kutyával

I don’t think it’s fair the way you kick him around all the time. He deserves some respect. – Szerintem nem rendes, hogy állandóan úgy bánsz vele, mint egy kutyával. Megérdemel némi tiszteletet.

9. to take sides – to support one person, or stand against another, in a dispute or contest – valamelyik oldalra állni, azt támogatni, állást foglani valamelyik oldal mellett

I’m not taking sides. I think, you’re both wrong, so I’m not getting involved. – Egyik oldalt sem támogatom. Szerintem egyikőtöknek sincs igaza, ezért nem kívánok belebonyolódni.

10. league – a class or category of quality or excellence – klasszis

When it comes to achieving perfection, John is in a league of his own. – Ha tökéletességről beszélünk, John maga egy klasszis, senkivel sem összehasonlítható.

11. to blow the whistle on someone – to bring an illicit activity to an end by informing on the person responsible – beköpni, beárulni

She was offered a lot of money as a bribe, because she threatened to blow the whistle on the company’s illegal activities. – Sok pénzzel próbálták meg megvesztegetni, mert azzal fenyegetőzött, hogy beárulja a cég illegális tevékenységét.

12. a game plan – a strategy worked out in advance – stratégia, előzetes terv

We need to come up with a better game plan, this idea will never work. – Jobb stratégiával kell előrukkolnunk, ez az ötlet sosem fog működni.

13. a game changer – an idea, procedure or event that significantly changes the current way of doing or thinking about something – sorsfordító, forradalmi változás, újítás

The new software had become known as the new game-changing entertainment experience. – Az új software forradalmi újításként lett ismert a szórakoztatásban.
