Real-life room escape games are a sort of physical adventure game in which people are locked in a room with other participants and have to use elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles, find clues, and escape the room within a set time limit. The room or rooms always have a backstory to help create the right atmosphere. Some games include sub-plots. The games are based on “escape the room” video games in which the player is locked inside a room and must explore their surroundings in order to escape. Players must be observant and use their critical thinking skills to escape the room. Other inspirations include adventure board games and movies.

Weekend or day event escape games have been held in the United States, Europe, Australia and a number of Asian countries. In the 2010s, real-life room escape games became popular in the United States, Japan, Taiwan and mainland China. Each game integrates local concepts or original themes to settings. For example, some games require you to escape prison cells, space stations or werewolf villages. Some games may contain special sounds, lighting or other effects.

In Budapest, “escape room games” are luring in tourists and locals alike. Since Parapark opened its doors in 2011, the business started to bloom and it is estimated there are now about 60 different escape games in the Hungarian capital. The themes are pleasingly varied, including joining Alice down the rabbit hole, racing to defuse a suitcase bomb and being trapped in a psychiatric ward.
