While trailing the back of the field of runners at the Rodes City Run 10K, Louisville Metro Police Department Lieutenant Aubrey Gregory noticed one runner ahead of him was struggling.

“I’m not going to let her quit, – I thought – so I got out and she immediately grabbed my hand,” Gregory said.

That runner was Asia Ford, a Louisville, Kentucky, resident who signed up for the race as the next step of her weight-loss journey. Ford was spurred to start shedding pounds – she weighed 474 pounds at her heaviest – when her then husband lost a limb due to diabetes. Ford has lost more than 200 pounds so far doing regular exercises and workout. She decided to take part in the 10K race as a fitness challenge to herself. She’s been training for months and was determined to finish the race. But with about two miles to go, Ford found herself struggling.

She successfully made it through the first four miles then she began to feel sick. That’s when she received a helping hand from an unexpected source andlieutenant Gregory stepped in. Gregory noticed that Ford was having difficulty, so he emerged from his squad car and approached the woman to see if he could offer assistance.

“As soon as I walked up to her, she immediately grabbed my hand,” Gregory said. She told him that she didn’t want to stop, to which he reportedly responded: “Good, then we’re going to do this together.”

“He asked me if I wanted to stop and I was like, ‘No, we have two more miles to go,’” Ford said.

The pair, accompanied by Ford’s son, walked the final two miles to the finish line hand in hand. Ford finished third to last with a time of 2:07.17but when she finally crossed the finish line, she was welcomed like a champion. 

“Your heart starts to fill up, you get those goose bumps and tingles all over your body,” Gregory said. “When I watched her approach, I started to hear people scream and I let her go right there before the end. To see her raise her hands, there aren’t words to express the way I felt seeing her be successful.”

It was a “very, very special moment that I will never forget,” Gregory said.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer later posted photos of the encounter on Twitter. This, he wrote, is “what a compassionate city looks like.” 

The heartwarming images have since gone viral on social media. On Facebook Ford called Gregory her “angel”.

Asia Ford was a real winner. Let’s look at some expressions with the word ’win’.

A difficult situation in which whatever happens the result will be bad for the people involved.

 I’m in a no-win situation here. Whatever I do, I’m going to annoy someone.

4. Win some, lose some. or WSLS– Egyszer fenn, egyszer lenn (hol győzelem, hol vereség).

 Sometimes one will succeed, other times one will fail.

 I was sorry to hear that you didn’t win your court case. Well, you win some, you lose some.

5. He that would the daughter win, must with the mother first begin. – Nyerd meg előbb az anyját, ha feleségül akarod venni a lányát.

If you want to marry a woman, you should find a way to impress her mother, so that the mother will favor her marrying you.

I think I want to marry Gina.  Don’t propose to her until you’re sure her mother is on your side. He that would the daughter win, must with the mother first begin.

6. Winners never quit and quitters never win.– A győztesek azok, akik nem adják fel, aki feladja, soha nem fog győzni.

You can’t expect to get good results if you keep making excuses and quitting before you have a chance to reach your goals. 

There is no chance to win this race. I think I should quit, but my parents always told me ‘Winners never quit and quitters never win.
