What was happening in the world one hundred years ago?

Number 5 — A French professor predicted what the white man of the future would look like. He claimed that males would have bigger heads, shorter arms and fewer teeth than the men of 1913. He also predicted that little toes would become smaller and that some ribs would disappear leaving only nine on either side.

Number 4 — A 4-year-old boy, Johnny Washburn was locked in a closet for being naughty. Well, he soon found a cigarette and matches in his father’s clothes which were hanging beside him. He ended up starting a fire which caused about $400 worth of damage. On a side note, the small boy claimed that the cigarette didn’t make him sick at all.

Number 3 — A prominent announcement covered the opening of the Grand Central Terminal on February 2nd 1913. It was described as three times larger than any other terminal allowing it to keep pace with the traffic demands of New York City.

Number 2 — Dr. W.G. Lyle, a researcher at Roosevelt Hospital was livid after a news report surfaced claiming that a cure for cancer had been discovered. He said that it was completely unfounded and claimed that the proclamation was embarrassing, as people would feel deceived. He asked The New Times to stop printing the misleading reports.

Number 1 — A 33-year-old woman from
Wisconsin, Bertha Breheim died after taking consecutive doses of headache powders which contained coal tar. She took the remedy three times during the night but the fourth dose in the morning killed her.
