Michael Keaton is one of the movie world’s most talented and versatile actors, with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice! out soon here are a few movies to remind us of what a great actor Keaton is.
Mr. Mom (1983)
In this box office hit Jack Butler (Keaton) is a fired mechanic who becomes a stay-at-home dad while his wife returns to work. Keaton’s performance is charming, funny, and relatable, capturing the challenges of domestic life with humour.
Clean and Sober (1988)
Keaton left his usual comedy roles to play Daryl Poynter, an estate agent struggling with addiction. His intense, vulnerable performance earned praise and a turning point in his career, proving that he had the range to take on powerful dramatic roles.
Beetlejuice (1988)
In Tim Burton’s classic gothic movie, Keaton played the mischievous and chaotic demon Betelgeuse, and delivered one of his best performances with perfect comedy timing to make the character simply unforgettable. The story follows the spirits of a deceased couple (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) being harassed by the unbearable Deetz family that have moved into their home, and they hire malicious spirit Beetlejuice to scare the family away. The movie was a huge success, and Keaton’s performance became a cult favourite.
Batman (1989)
Tim Burton’s version gives us a darker, more complex version of Batman with Keaton leading the movie as Bruce Wayne. Alongside a great cast including Jack Nicholson and Kim Basinger and a cool soundtrack from Prince, Keaton showed us a Dark Knight with a tortured soul hiding behind his mask of wealth and power.
Pacific Heights (1990)
Keaton plays the awful, sadistic tenant who torments landlords Melanie Griffith and Matthew Modine by not paying rent and releasing cockroaches with hopes of forcing them into foreclosure and buying the place himself.
Batman Returns (1992)
Keaton reprised his role in Batman Returns, again under the direction of Tim Burton. The film went further into the dark side of Bruce Wayne and Keaton gave an even more complex performance. Batman deals with the Penguin (Danny DeVito) bringing terror to Gotham City. Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Catwoman with her own vendetta.
Multiplicity (1996)
A slapstick cult comedy classic, Keaton plays Doug Kinney, a man who clones himself to manage his hectic life, oversee his business and still be there for his wife. Keaton’s performance is wonderfully versatile, as he plays multiple versions of the same character, each with different personalities.
Jackie Brown (1997)
In Quentin Tarantino’s movie Keaton plays agent Ray Nicolette, in a smaller role but making an impact with his cool, laid-back performance.
The Other Guys (2010)
In this hilarious buddy cop movie, two different New York City detectives (Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg) have an opportunity to step up like the top police officers they worship – only things don’t go well. Keaton plays their Captain Gene Mauch who is very much in charge,
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Oscar winning film Birdman brought a well-received return to fame for Keaton playing the role of Riggan Thomson, a once famous actor known for playing a superhero, struggling to revive his fading career on Broadway. Keaton’s vulnerable performance got him a Golden Globe for Best Actor and an Academy Award nomination.
Spotlight (2015)
In this Academy Award-winning film, Keaton is in a serious role as Walter “Robby” Robinson, editor of the Boston Globe’s investigative team. A true story of the newspaper’s investigation into the massive scandal of the Catholic Church’s cover-up of sexual abuse. Keaton and the cast’s performances gained a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance.
The Founder (2016)
In this interesting story Keaton took on the role of struggling salesperson Ray Kroc, the man who followed the American dream and transformed food chain McDonald’s from a single burger restaurant into a global empire. Keaton’s portrayal of Kroc is charismatic and chilling as he goes through moral complexities from ambition, greed, and success.
Spiderman: Homecoming (2017)
Peter Parker tries to stop villain Adrian the Vulture (Keaton) from selling weapons while trying to balance his normal teenage life.
Knox Goes Away (2024)
Keaton directs a thoughtful thriller following contract killer John Knox (Keaton), just out of prison, who is diagnosed with a fast-progressing type of dementia. With only weeks left, Knox intends to retire when suddenly his estranged son Miles (James Marsden) needs his help after killing a man for raping his daughter. Knox gathers up all the incriminating evidence for Miles to try to prove his innocence.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)
(Don’t say it three times!) Back for a long-awaited sequel, Keaton takes on the green haired character again. When Beetlejuice (Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!) is summoned, you never know what he will do next. Now, over thirty years later, he is about to bring even more chaos as, after a family tragedy, the Deetz family return home to Winter River – and Lydia’s teenage daughter Astrid accidentally opens a portal to the afterlife…
